The Master’s thesis consists of four parts: literature review, research methodology, analysis of research results, and conclusions and proposals. The literature review part is subdivided into three subsections: the concept and characteristics of cryptocurrencies, regulatory issues in the cryptocurrency market, and criminal activities in the cryptocurrency market. The subsection on the concept and characteristics of cryptocurrencies delves into the analysis of cryptocurrency definitions, operating principles, and a comparative examination of cryptocurrency and traditional fiat and gold-standard-based markets. The regulatory issues subsection explores contemporary challenges associated with cryptocurrency market regulation, encompassing both theoretical and practical aspects. Lastly, the criminal activities occurring in the cryptocurrency market subsection identifies and discusses criminal behavior in the cryptocurrency market, drawing support from pertinent scientific literature. To conduct research on the occurrence of criminal activity in the cryptocurrency market, the methods of data collection, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, simple regression, Chi-square, statistical data analysis, analysis of research results, methods of analysis, summarization and evaluation were used. The research was conducted from 1st March 2023 to 31st March 2023 utilizing manually collected data from BitcoinAbuse.com and Blockchain.com websites. Such data is related to addresses of cryptocurrency wallets, which were used to commit criminal activity in the cryptocurrency market, as well as other related characteristics. The research findings reveal that criminal acts within the cryptocurrency market extend beyond those identified in existing scientific literature. Furthermore, a significant number of cryptocurrency wallet addresses are linked to criminal acts aimed at acquiring cryptocurrencies, not through fraudulent means, but with an adverse impact on users in the cryptocurrency market. Additionally, a considerable portion of crypto-related crimes is not concentrated within a small number of cryptocurrency wallet addresses. The results of this Master’s thesis are not intended for publication. |
