Abstract [eng] Master‘s thesis examines the concepts of ibasho (safe spaces) and factors of inclusion into the community of university among LGBTQ+ student group members. The thesis investigates whether and how participation in LGBTQ+ groups at Japanese universities affects inclusion of non-heterosexual students into the university community. The objectives of the study are: to discuss issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Japanese education system; to identify how LGBTQ+ students construct the concept of ibasho in universities; to determine if and how participation in LGBTQ+ groups influences students‘ belonging to university. Research includes interviews and a focus group with members of LGBTQ+ groups. Additional data collected through survey and analysis of public information from groups and universities. The theoretical framework of study combines V. Tinto‘s student inclusion theory and the concept of ibasho. Research shows that students see groups as ibasho in universities and their participation helps them persist in studies while fostering a sense of partial belonging to the university community. Although universities emphasize diversity, students rate this process as insufficient. When groups are designed for socially vulnerable students, fully inclusive institutional environment is necessary, otherwise they may form communities that are emotionally disconnected from university. The study expands research on LGBTQ+ groups at Japanese universities by conceptualizing relationship between group participation and inclusion in the university community. The findings would be valuable for comparative research on inclusion of LGBTQ+ students who do not participate in such groups or for a deeper exploration of how different LGBTQ+ identities engage with groups and university community.
