Abstract [eng] |
This paper examines Artemidorus' hermeneutical methods which help the dream interpreter to determine the outcome of a dream. The paper broadly discusses the plan of action for interpretation, which consists of determining the portent of the dream, Artemidorus' development of the theory of the six elements (στοιχεῖα), the significance of the dreamer's social identity for the interpretation of the dream, and the linking of all these methods to the symbols seen in the dream, which are explained through the use of analogy, wordplay, homonyms and etymologies. The work also discusses two works on dream interpretation that use similar methods: the ancient Egyptian papyri and the Hippocratic corpus Περὶ διαίτης. Their study creates a parallel with the work of Artemidorus. |
