Abstract [eng] The Lithuanian Culture Project by Andrius Vištelis, one of the Main “Auszra” Contributors The object of the thesis is the Lithuanian culture project of Andrius Vištelis, and the goal is to reconstruct and contextualize that project in the 19th century of the second half in the field of cultural nationalism phenomena and the processes of modernization of Lithuanian culture. The methods of New historicism and cultural nationalism studies are being used for this purpose. So far, the leading research of Vištelis biography and work has been carried out by Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, Vincas Kuzmickas, Vladas Žukas, Viktorija Daujotytė, Tomas Petreikis. For them, Vištelis is discussed as a member of the larger group of “Auszra” poets. It is understandable that in this way, the playful creation of Vištelis's improvisational nature is not sufficiently revealed, which is what this research aimed to do. In this thesis, Vištelis' work is discussed not from an aesthetic perspective but from a cultural research perspective in order to reveal the heterogeneous nature of cultural nationalism in the Lithuanian culture project of Andrius Vištelis and to provide the discourse of Lithuanian literary history with new material. The first chapter of the thesis conceptualizes the problem of Vištelis reception and research in the historiography of Lithuanian literature. Methodological provisions of new historicism and cultural nationalism are used to study “Auszra” discourse and re-contextualize Vištelis' work and activities. The second chapter is aimed to reconstruct the environment of Vištelis, and its communication networks, revealing an active interaction with the January Uprising (1863-1864) rebels, Prussian Lithuanians, and aušrininkai; those networks forming the Lithuanian cultural project of Vištelis, the cultural tensions arising in these interactions. From the perspective of Vištelis, the dispute between Jonas Basanavičius and Jonas Šliūpas regarding “Dziennik Pozńanski” is actualized, which characteristically reveals the cultural tensions between the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and the cultures of modern nationalism, which revealed Vištelis' position in the face of the decline of heterogeneous culture. In the third chapter, reviewing the collection of personal readings and translations of Vištelis, the impact of the phenomenon of Osianism and the practice of poetic reconstruction on Vištelis work and the importance of the ideas of utopian socialism for the Lithuanian cultural project of Vištelis are explored. These socialist ideas are revealed in the poems "Zēmes Dalyba (dalinims)" and "Dalinimas Żemes". The last and fourth part delves into the motivations and strategies of creating the epic of the nation by Vištelis, among which the ambition to consolidate the intelligentsia and its unique role in the Lithuanian cultural project are prominent. The search for the nation's epic is crowned by the unfinished poem "Kastītis ir Juraite". In the poem, the ideas of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) heritage are vivid, as the concept of imagined paganism. The thesis detailed the place of Vištelis in “Auszra” discourse and clarified his position as a poet-philologist of an authority to supplement the view established in history that Vištelis was a strange unproductive poet. The facts of the work and biography of Vištelis have also been updated. This thesis shows that Vištelis can be considered the author of Lithuanian messianism, continuing the tradition of the romanticism literature of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth uniquely. The appendices of the thesis contain transcriptions of the unpublished texts of Vištelis "Zēmes Dalyba (dalinims)" and "Dalinimas Żemes", Kastītis and Juraite.
