Abstract [eng] The vision of the Lithuanian state, the social agreement – the Strategy for Progress of Lithuania "Lithuania 2030" – emphasises the importance of not being afraid of innovations and bravely accepting the challenges of competition, exploiting opportunities, changing and adapting to changes. One of the aims is to become a smart, mature society that is happy and open to new ideas, innovation and challenges. As societies change and become smarter, there is also a need to develop a new leadership approach to the world, and to orient the general education system towards creativity, citizenship and leadership. Today, there is no doubt that leadership in schools is an aspiration. The research problem – how is leadership development going for pupils in primary schools? Object of the study. Leadership education for primary school pupils. The aim of the study is to investigate theoretically and empirically the leadership development of primary school pupils. To achieve the goal, the following tasks were set: to analyse theoretically the leadership development of primary school pupils; to identify the prerequisites of leadership development of primary school pupils; to investigate how leadership development is perceived, implemented by primary school teachers and primary school pupils of X gymnasium of Radviliskis’ district. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature and educational documents, structured interview, group discussion, qualitative data analysis. The research revealed that primary school teachers of X gymnasium of Radviliskis’ district describe a pupil leader as a child with outstanding personal qualities, who is able to be part of a team (group) and learns how to work in a cooperative and collaborative way. Both teachers and pupils in the study identify similar personal qualities of a primary school pupil leader, such as being creative, responsible, helpful, capable work in communication and cooperation in a team, and able to plan and organize activities. Leadership education for primary school pupils is important and has a significant impact on their overall personal growth and learning. Teachers choose their methods to pupils’ leadership development in a deliberate, purposeful, meaningful and planned manner. Leadership is developed by naturally integrating into the educational process certain elements, non-formal education, projects. Similar ideas about the choice of methods, the expression of leadership in lessons and non-formal education are provided by primary school pupils.
