Abstract [eng] 48 pages, 9 tables, 15 pictures, 59 references. The thesis focuses specifically on developers and their managers. Research has been done in the IT sector of bank services in Lithuania. Interviews with developers and their managers have been carried out. The work consists of three main parts: the analysis of literature on leadership and team performance, the research, the results and conclusions. Research focused on 4 main banks with substantial IT departments. The author has interviewed in total 9 people about what their expectations for an effective leader of developers are and how it influences the team. The performed research revealed that while the work in a development team is highly technical, an IT leader's soft skills are still more important than hard ones. The most often repeated trait of an IT team manager was the ability to communicate clearly. The opinions of people with IT management experience and developers differed. Developers especially value leaders' technical skills. While IT managers think that ability to communicate and empowerment are the most important skills of an IT leader. The correlation between IT leaders' skills/traits and the results of developers' work exists. Motivation to work is highly influenced by the IT manager's ability to communicate clearly. Research also reveals that every IT manager or leader must possess at least basic IT skills. The recommendations address two main points: finding out why especially developers with less experience value technical skills of managers and that this research serves as a guideline for hiring managers on which traits to look for in an IT leader.
