Sweat lodge is an ancient tradition of Native American tribes, which is used for healing and to maintain good health. Nowadays this method in USA and Canada is integrated into the practice of many mental health centers, programs for substance use and in prisons. Sweat lodges are becoming more popular in Europe and Lithuania. However, there is no research done. The aim of this study is to gain insight into the experience of Native American sweat lodge. For that purpose qualitative study was conducted. The study involved 8 participants, 4 men and 4 women (age 27-57), who have participated in at least one sweat lodge during the last half year. Research data was collected using semi structured interview.Data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Four main themes were revealed in this study: Experiencing self as part of something greater, Spiritual experience, The feeling of safety and Summary of personal experience as transformation. |
