Semiotics and Translation studies are two interdisciplinary fields that can serve in each other‘s practices. Perhaps the most controversial scientific issue is the translation of poetry, which, because of its highly concentrated form and content, makes it difficult to transfer the information of an artistic text into another natural language. This paper proposes the use of semiotic concepts and analytical tools as a method of examining the result of translation, i.e. the transfer of meaning, and at the same time as a way of facilitating the translation process. The object of this analysis is Louise Glück's poetry collection "The Wild Iris", which was translated into Lithuanian by Marius Burokas and Dominykas Norkūnas. Literary criticism of this collection has shown that there is no consensus on the predominant speakers in the collection, so this paper comparatively analyses the representation of speaker in the original and translated languages. Reading horizontally, the poems that best illustrate the problem of the representation of speaker were selected for analysis. The analysis of pronouns, grammatical categories and points of view is based on the tools of the French school of semiotics, which allow the identification and comparison of the isotopies of meaning and the distribution of actant roles. The Systematics of Designification developed by Öztürk Kasar is used to evaluate the translation of the individual figures in the text. Yuri Lotman's cultural theory is used for the interpretation of the (non-)transference and addition of meanings, which allows us to make cultural assumptions about the translators' chosen translation strategies. The analysis of the translations revealed that the translators were only partially successful in preserving the indeterminacy of the subject of speaking in the translated text – often only one of the several potential isotopies present in the original text is retained in the translations. |
