| Abstract [eng] |
The MA thesis investigates Katherine Paterson’s Bildungsromane for young adults – "Lyddie" and "Jacob Have I Loved". Based on the idealist concept of Bildung, the theory of the Bildungsroman, the feminist critique of the female Bildungsroman, and the works of scholars of young adult literature, the way in which personal Bildung is portrayed in the novels is analyzed. The main focus is on the problems of alienation, intersubjectivity and the pursuit of freedom. It is concluded that although the protagonists cannot implement the traditional program of the genre due to gender and age-specific restrictions, their unique experiences modify the program itself. A dialogue with the model of personal becoming which is implied in the classical Bildungsroman is actively created in Paterson’s novels. |
