Abstract [eng] Links between high school student's motivational beliefs and motivation to learn English The aim of the study was to determine whether the expectancy of success, utility value, attainment value, intrinsic value and cost can predict students' motivation to learn English. The participants were 102 students: 39 males and 63 females aged between 15 and 19 years, mean age 16,98 years, standard deviation (SD) 1,19. Two methodologies were used: the Mini - Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (mini - AMTB) consisting of 20 statements was used to measure motivation, and the Expectancy-Value Questionnaire (EVQ) consisting of 18 statements was used to measure motivating beliefs. The results of the study showed that gymnasium students beliefs about ability, the utility value of the task and the attainment value of achievement determine the strength of their motivation to learn English. The role of the young person's gender in predicting the motivation of grammar school students for language learning was also evident. Girl9s are more motivated to learn English than boys. Intrinsic value and price beliefs are not related to motivation to learn English and did not affect the strength of motivation. Keywords: Gymnasium students, English learning motivation, expectancy-value theory.
