Abstract [eng] This study examined the social integration of refugees in Lithuania and the need for social assistance to refugees and the challenges it provides. The object of the research is the coherence between the need for social assistance of refugees and its provision. Qualitative research access (semi-structured interview) methodology is used for the research. Study participants: three refugees who are or have been involved in the social integration process and three professionals providing social services to refugees. The theoretical part examines migration trends in the world and in Lithuania and discusses the social integration practices of foreign refugees. The Lithuanian legal acts regulating the social integration of refugees and the services provided are reviewed in more detail. The data obtained in this study are analyzed through the approach to the theory of social capital. In researching the need for social assistance for refugees, we have refined the essential aspects that promote the process of social integration of foreigners receiving asylum, such as assistance through various state and non-governmental organizations, translation services, community support and Lithuanian language courses. Several areas have emerged that present the greatest challenges in the provision and receipt of social services: cultural differences, the Lithuanian language, social capital, and the provision of services as a process. According to the obtained research data, we revealed the main factors that ensure the successful process of social integration of foreigners granted asylum, namely the social capital of the foreigner and proficiency in the Lithuanian language. The topic of this work is useful for the practice of social work in that as the number of refugees in Lithuania grows, so does the need for qualified social workers who would be ready to face the challenges of this specific work. The results of the study provide knowledge about these challenges and possible solutions.
