A new, rapidly growing modern information society is discussed to a large extent. This society is based on the development of information technology and its massive application in different areas of life as well as orientation of the society members towards intellectu-al products, determined by information processes. It is claimed that a united and accurate assessment and classification system of information society has been not created so far. The variety of attitudes to the existing models and theories of the information society are studied. The information society development is seen as a constituent part of globalisation process, revealing new opportunities and threats to the society. It is stated that the information society is the first step towards the knowledge society. The consistentpatterns of formation of the information society in Lithuania and initiatives of the European Union (EU) in this underlying direction of the society development are analysed. |
