Abstract [eng] Identifying the social and psychological causes and consequences of corruption is very important as it can help reduce the prevalence of corruption. The purpose of the work is to identify not only social, but also psychological factors and situations that affect participation in corruption. The study involved 277 people aged 12 to 72 years, 109 men and 147 women (Internet users, researchers, students, convicts, government officials). A special questionnaire was developed for the study. The results revealed the following main causes of corruption: a) social (bureaucratic obstacles, traditions, low wages); b) psychological (greed, low self-esteem, ambition). Corruption in most cases creates negative and dangerous for the public social (distortion of competition, injustice, danger to health or even human life) and psychological (frustration, fear, anger, helplessness) consequences. According to the survey participants, both external (social) and internal (psychological) factors contribute to participation in corruption. Even if a person has a negative attitude towards corruption, the external (social) environment or problems can push him to participate in corruption. The findings can be useful in developing guidelines for combating corruption, improving the effectiveness of anti-corruption programs and reducing corruption.
