Abstract [eng] Organized crime may appear to be non-existent phenomenon in Lithuania. There are no more criminal groups that did not give peace to the public for some time through robberies, theft, extortion, rackets, killings of people and other crimes in the last decade of twentieth century. However, organized crime is becoming an international problem which affects many countries in present global world. Financial crimes, smuggling of various goods, human trafficking, illegal migration or documents counterfeiting are just some of the criminal activities which are successfully carried out by international organized groups in different countries, generating enormous profit for themselves while damaging the economies of states. This master’s thesis examines the development and tendencies of organized crime in Lithuania, from its earliest beginnings as a member of the Soviet Union to up towards today. Based on Criminology theories, organized crime is investigated through criminological discourses – professional, political and public. As well as the types of social knowledge in order to understand political, economic, cultural reasons, prevention measures and its effectiveness at both national and international levels of this phenomenon.
