The thesis explores the expression of the documentary in cinema and theater. On this basis, a division between documentary cinema and documentary as way of functioning (unbound from cinema) is introduced. This allows the application of documentary theory to the analysis of other arts/media. The films by D. Narkevičius and theater performances by J. Tertelis (both are distinguished by special attention to the documentary) are analyzed. The study revealed that documentary expression is evident through certain references to reality. They can be presented in three types of documents: index, iconic and symbolic. Another constitutive element of documentary is the division between "showing" and "telling" documents. The main differences between documentary cinema and documentary theater: documentary cinema references to reality beyond the time and space of the viewer, and the documentary in theater is manifested as being here and now through "embedded documents". |
