Abstract [eng] The national higher education system is a complex monolithic formation comprising of different interrelated elements such as the legal statutory base of the higher education, management of higher education institutions, structure of self-government of institutions, financing of education and studies, aspects of access to studies, quality of studies, etc. Intense development of the higher education in many countries all over the world has raised many problems often related to peculiarities of management of the higher education, limited financial possibilities and lack of cooperation not only with business structures but also with social partners. The research selected has been carried out in order to analyse the attitude of different social groups towards the higher education in Lithuania. Four social groups, more or less influencing the higher education, have been distinguished: academic society, representatives of the society, employers and students. The results analysed support the hypothesis of the research that each social group perceives only those aspects of the higher education that are relevant to it. The results of the research have showed that social dependence has influence on the opinion of respondents regarding the higher education. Therefore, it must be acknowledged that representatives of each social group have to make every endeavour in order to perceive needs and objectives of members of other social groups regarding the higher education. Only close cooperation will facilitate representatives of all social groups to perceive the broader context of the higher education.
