Abstract [eng] Education must be developed, taking into consideration new challenges and new opportunities occurring for the Lithuanian society. Strategic planning carried out in schools of general education, every educational institution must look for clear strategic mechanisms for decision-taking and realisation so that having adapted the national educational strategy it could successfully act, compete in the educational market and work efficiently in order to survive. Referring to this, problem of the research was raised, namely the situation of practical application for strategic planning is not sufficiently analysed in the Lithuanian schools which aggravates the introduction of recommendations for the improvement of strategic planning in the latter. In total, 228 respondents from schools of general education in Kaunas, Marijampolė and Klaipėda counties were questioned. It was striven to ascertain the attitude by school directors and deputy directors towards strategic planning, their participation in the process of strategic planning in schools of general education. Data of the research which justified the hypothesis raised have been provided in this master thesis. Results of the research conducted show the following: • Schools develop strategic plans which are made for various periods, from 3 to 5 years. • Lack in experience related to the development of strategic planning was ascertained and therefore theoretical and practical training is required. • In general, attitude by school directors and deputy directors of general education schools towards strategic planning is positive, although an opposite opinion exists among those who do not see any benefit from strategic planning. • School director is also an initiator of changes and strategic planning since namely the latter along with many other respondents foresee the vision of their institution.
