Abstract [eng] General competences are the conveyed multifunctional whole of knowledge, skills and principles that enables to ensure the personal development, social integration and work of each individual. Everyone must be provided with an opportunity to acquire it, including pupils who have not completed the school and studying adults. The purpose of this paper is to estimate educational possibilities of key competence development at Adult Education Centre. 288 students and 52 workers of the Adult Education Centre participated in the research. The foundation of the research consists of the decomposition of key competence categories into elements and the estimation of learning environment for competence development. The qualitative research was combined with the quantitative one: when investigating the opinion of respondents about key competence elements, the method of assembled group inquest was applied, and when establishing the situation of key competence development at adult education centre, the method of questionnaire inquest was applied. The statistic data processing is based on the statistic frequency and correlative analysis. The program Microsoft Windows XP Professional (MS Word, MS Excel, SPSS-11) was used to process the data. On the ground of results obtained, the conclusions were formulated and suggestions were made: 1) The model of key competences consists of 8 categories of key competences divided up into 40 elements. 2) Respondents understand the importance of key competence development in the process of education and subscribe to principles of applying the European dimensions in education. It is necessary to master the new knowledge, to induce initiative, and cooperation all one’s life. 3) The development of key competences developed most widely at Adult Education Centre – learning to learn, communication and mathematical literacy – has an integrative, systematic character. Mostly applied methods of active training / learning are related with knowledge and its understanding. The contents of training / learning and methods applied satisfy in most cases the needs of students, and the environment excites the positive feelings and encourages the personal perfection. 4) Some elements of key competences and methods of active training / learning applied are related with statistically important relations. 5) Suggestion: to turn the attention to important key competences that are currently still weakly developed in studying adults and ensure possibilities for their development, to induce the qualification improvement of andragogues, to provide studying adults with opportunities to participate actively in the management of their training / learning process.
