Abstract [eng] Relevance of the topic. Generation changes within the society have a direct impact on companies, schools, and other organisations which have to face the challenges of employee turnover. Junior staff become promoted to managerial positions while a new generation of students fill in the vacant positions. Based on the shift of attidude, expectations, needs and values between generations, organisation executives should strive to understand what they can expect from their current employees, the new upcoming generation, and students, as well as how to attract, motivate and keep them in their company. Subject of the investigation. The factors affecting the selection of teacher‘s profession as a career path in X, Y and Z generations. Objective of the investigation. To analyse and compare the factors affecting the selection of teacher‘s profession as a career path in X, Y and Z generations. Methodology. In order to achieve an empirical assessment of the factors affecting the selection of teacher‘s professtion as a career path in X, Y and Z generations, a qualitative assessment was selected. At the beginning of the investigation, three seperate focus group discussions for each generation were organised. Each focus group inolved from six to eight participants. In order to clarify and supplement the data received in focus group discussions, qualitative interviews were carried out with seven X- and Y-generation teachers, and seven Z-generation students. Partly structured questionnaires were used in both the focus group discussions and interviews. Results of the investigation. During the investigation carried out for this thesis, it was noticed that every generation had a distinct career selection process. The majority of X-generation representatives had already thought about their profession since childhood and often immitated it through their games as children. Interviewees from Y- and Z- generations were lacking such factor. Y- and Z- generation representatives usually begin thinking about their future occupations only at the final years of school or after graduatinf school altogether. It was observed that Z-generation students are not particularly interested in teacher‘s profession. During the investigation, it was established that the decision of X-generation representives to become teachers was strongly affected by the external factors, such as experience of family and relatives, authority, and prestige of the profession, social guarantees and other life events. For Y-generation both of the discussed factor groups (i.e. internal and external factors) were of similar importance, while Z-generation is currently primarily oriented at internal factors, such as skills, values, interests, personal features, and the like. Teacher‘s profession has many advantages, such as long holidays, more flexible work schedule, work with the youth, potential for improvement, etc. Such advantages encourage students to pick or think about this speciality. It is worth noting that these factors were and often times still are a significant incentive while choosing a teacher‘s career. However, in order for this profession to regain its previous prestige and positive outlook from society, the current situation requires change in improving the career selection process for graduates, changing work environment at schools, and reassessing the priorities of education policy.
