Abstract [eng] After regaining independence during the fifteen recent years of market economy the country has set down some specific publishing traditions and laws, has stored some statistical information, which has neither been thoroughly examined nor described. As a consequence they have not been adopted to analyze the market, get forecast ready, develop its activity. The purpose of this Master work is to analyze the activity of small publishing offices in Lithuania from 1990 to 2005 years. To achieve purpose there have been three main tasks settled: 1. To analyze the publishing as a small and average market. 2. To analyze its statistics, stock of books published, change of tendency of editing. 3. To accomplish inquiry how small publishing offices act in market-led. There has been an object chosen – small publishing offices in Lithuania, which edit five and fewer non-periodical publications. The following methods have been used: analysis of scientific literature and documents; analysis of statistical information; questionnaire survey. Striving to analyze the activity of small publishing offices in Lithuania in the years of its independence, there have been the following research results and conclusions done. Lithuania Publishing market has got some large publishers, the rest are either average size or small publishing offices, which perform their programs of small extent. These small publishing offices amount 15,5 percent of all the publishers in Lithuania. Publishing offices belong to the market, which is considered to be the basis of economy and which is constantly inspired and supported by the Government. Among all the publishing offices there are some, which are just starting their activity and during their first year they are unable to publish a lot. Also, some publishing offices, which contract their activity as they are closing down. The most numerous group of small publishing offices is the ones, which undertake constant small coverage. Recently in Lithuania there have remained fewer publishers, because small publishing offices disappear sooner, close down sooner than the others. Nevertheless, there is a growth of the number of editions published both by small and large publishing offices. True, the run is getting less. On the one hand, small publishers is usual unit of market structure. On the other hand, it has got its own specific, tendency to cultural activity, also, the lack of the use of usual marketing means, which is more effectively used in other industrial units. The perspectives of small publishing offices is not unambiguous. They can persist if they get a necessary specialization as well as providing additional service, getting support and publishing contracting publication. One of the most successful assumptions of their survival is to acclimatize to the needs of today’s market, like: consolidate their management, effective use of marketing means, practice of new industrial technology, modern methods of work and expansion of effective activity.
