5th – 12th Grade Students Knowledge About the Noise Impact on Health The aim of the work – To assess students’ of 5-12 grades knowledge about noise effects to our health. The tasks of the research: 1. To ascertain the concept of noise perceived by students and their theoretical knowledge about the noise effects to our health. 2. To identify the sources of noise about which students worry the most. 3. To assess the real effects of noise to the well-being and health of students. 4. To determine students‘knowledge about noise, noise effects to our health, sources of information and the means against noise, suggested by the students. Methods: The research was made by using anonymous questionnaire survey. Actual group of the respondents is 605 pupils of 5-12 grades from schools in Naujoji Vilnia. Statistical data analysis was made by EpiData 3.1., SPSS Statistics 21 software. Results and conclusions: 76.2 per cent of the students described the concept of noise correctly. Girls marked the correct answer more often than the boys, as well as students of higher grades in compare with students of lower grades and students of older age in compare with younger students. More than a half (58.0 per cent) of the students think that noise cause negative effects to our health. Such opinion was presented more by students of lower grades in compare with the students of higher grades as well as more girls than boys. (70.0 per cent and 64.9 per cent respectively; p<0.01). More students of older age in compare with younger students understand that listening to music through headphones is harmful (63.8 per cent and 52.8 per cent; p=0.019). 86.1 per cent of the students specified that they feel worse in the noise environment. Most of the students indicated that it is noisy at school. Such answer was specified by more students of younger age (12-13 years old) in compare with older students and more girls in compare with the boys. About 50 per cent of the students specified that the noisiest place in the school is passages and 80 per cent indicated that the quietest place is the library. However, listening to the music helps to do homework for 37 per cent of the students. Younger students do not like being in noisy environment more commonly in compare with older students (75.6 per cent and 60.8 per cent; p<0,01). Students feelings in the noisy environment correlated with the age – the older students are, the more of feem feel worse in the noisy environment (r=0.098, p=0.016). Almost a half of the surveyed students (46 per cent) do not have sufficient information about noise effects to our health. The main source of information about the noise is the internet (30.1 per cent). More students of higher grades and more girls had chosen the answer “Internet“. The main means suggested by the students against noise are earplugs and protection headphones. The main means to fight against noise are penalties for the noise, teaching people to talk quietly and promote wearing headphones. Keywords: noise, students, health, harm, environmental noise. |
