Abstract [eng] The aim of the research- to investigate organic food consumption and approach to it among adults in Vilnius city. Methods. Research volume- 514 adults of Vilnius city. The method of anonymous questionnaire survey was applied for the research. Questionnaire contained questions of the respondents, they approach to organic food, reasons of consumption or not, accessibility of products, obtaining information. Data analysis was performed by using the program SPSS 14.0. Mann-Whitney rank sum criterion (U) was applied for analysis of statistically significant difference between the groups. The value chi square (&#967;2) was applied for evaluation of statistic relation of qualitative features. The data difference is statistically significant when p < 0,05. Results. Organic food are used by 82,1 % respondents, 88,2 % of them was women and 71,2 %- men. Women use statistically significantly more frequently (p= 0,000). There is statistically significant relation between age groups and consumption (p= 0,009), 18-34 years old of respondents use more frequently. Statistically significantly more frequently (p=0,012) use respondents, which earn >1501 Lt and <500 Lt money, also respondents, which have higher and vocational education (p=0,029). The reasons why people use organic food are: food safety (27,3 %), health (90,0 %), good taste (38,9 %). The non- used reasons are: too expensive (53,3 %), not good taste (5,4 %), short consumption time (21,7 %), don‘t knows which food is organic (28,3 %). Respondents most frequently buy fruits, berries, vegetables (71,8 %), dairy products (57,6 %), bread (49,3 %), tea (42,9 %), meat (29,9 %). Statistically significantly more frequently women buy fruits, berries, vegetables (p=0,010), eggs (p=0,002), spices (p=0,022), men- bread (p=0,002). People most frequently use organic food 2-3 times a week (37,2 %). There is statistically significant difference between sex and consumption frequency (p= 0,000). Consumers most frequently buy organic food in the supermarkets (83,6 %), less- in the market (34,1 %), in the fair (11,8 %), in other places (f.e. in the specialized stores)- 14,9 %. Although 41,1 % of respondents says it is difficult to find organic food. 87,4 % of respondents knows that organic food from conventional food they can separate from a label. There is no statistically significant relation between knowledge and sex, age, income level or education. Respondents heard of organic food from: friends and relatives (39,1 %), media (37,9 %), TV (36,8 %), shops (36,6 %), internet (26,3 %), educational institution (18,3 %), other places (8,0 %). 72,6 % of respondents says they have insufficient information of organic food. 18-34 years old of respondents statistically significantly more frequently heard of organic food from educational institution (p=0,000), people, which have higher education (p=0,037) and earn >1501 Lt (p=0,040)- from media. Conclusions. People use organic food, because it is healthy food and don’t use, because it is too expensive. Women and younger people statistically significantly more frequently use organic food. Most frequently organic food is bought in the supermarkets. Most of people knows how to separate organic food. Most of respondents have insufficient information of organic food.
