Abstract [eng] This master's thesis analyzes what employment is, what significance it has for a person and society, and how the concept of employment is defined in the works of legal and economic scholars. The author of the paper briefly reviewed how employment changed in Lithuania from a historical perspective and concluded that the biggest turning point in this area occurred after Lithuania regained its independence. During the analysis of the scientific literature, it was noticed that the legal doctrine does not address the topic of employment in detail, which could be determined by the importance of employment in several branches of law rather than in one specific one. To regulate this phenomenon, not only labor, but also social, administrative, civil and even criminal law norms are allocated. Not only every form of employment established in the Employment Law, but also the employment activities of persons in their subgroups are regulated in separate legal acts. Regardless, all forms of employment have not only differences, but also similarities, and the main element that unites them is the various benefits to the employed person and, at the same time, to society, arising from his employment activities. In the last part of the work, the conclusion was reached that employment is important not only from the aspect of national, but also international law. Most of the legal acts aimed at regulating employment are issued by the International Labor Organization, which seeks to ensure the basic social rights and freedoms of employed persons. Looking from the perspective of European Union law, the author of the paper decided to single out the principle of free movement of workers, which allows persons living in the European Union to be employed not only in their country of citizenship, but also in other European Union member states.
