The Experiences of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder in Art Therapy. The aim of the research – to reveal the experiences of patients with borderline personality disorder in art therapy. The methodology of the research. The qualitative research was performed. In order to explore the experience without preconceived notions and expectations, an in-depth semi-structured interview was used to collect data. Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three patients with borderline personality disorder participated in the study. In order to ensure the validity of the research, the data are analyzed inductively without reference to predetermined categories. The analysis is carried out taking into account the subjective perspective of the research participants and using terms and meanings they use. The research results. Data analysis revealed the main themes of art therapy experiences of patients with borderline personality disorder. (M): 1) Fears; 2) Meeting with the real self; 3) “The drawing reveals the truth”. (P): 1) “Look at yourself from a different angle”; 2) “I can feel it over here”. (R): 1) Introspection; 2) “Creation is a liberating power”; 3) Relationship with others. Several aspects of the art therapy process experience of patients with borderline personality type were also revealed: recognition and acceptance of feelings, clearer self-image, liberation and revelation in the creative process. The results allow us to assume that art therapy promotes patients awareness, and the creative process and interaction with drawing tools stimulate emotional processes. |
