The primary objective of this research is to explore the integration of process histories within business process modeling (BPM) frameworks and to evaluate the impact of this integration on the effectiveness of BPM practices. The thesis is structured into three primary sections: a comprehensive review of the existing literature, empirical research conducted through case studies and surveys, and a detailed analysis of the findings leading to strategic recommendations. The literature review section discusses the evolution of BPM and the increasing relevance of incorporating narrative elements—process histories—into BPM practices. It reviews theoretical foundations and current methodologies that integrate qualitative historical data to enrich process understanding and strategic planning. The empirical component involves multiple case studies where process histories were integrated into BPM. Data was collected from over 30 organizations, using both qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to gauge the effectiveness of narrative integration in BPM practices. The analysis focused on key performance indicators such as process clarity, stakeholder satisfaction, and adaptability of process models. The research findings suggest that incorporating process histories significantly enhances BPM by providing depth to process understanding, which in turn improves decision-making and operational efficiency. The quantitative analysis used statistical tools like SPSS, and the results were validated through Pearson’s correlation coefficients, showing strong positive impacts from narrative integration. The thesis concludes that the integration of process histories into BPM not only aids in capturing a comprehensive view of business processes but also facilitates organizational learning and continuous improvement. Recommendations are provided for BPM practitioners to adopt narrative integration strategies effectively, ensuring that the qualitative aspects of process histories are seamlessly incorporated into the quantitative BPM frameworks. This thesis contributes to the BPM literature by offering a novel perspective on the integration of qualitative data into BPM practices, providing actionable insights for organizations looking to enhance their process modeling methodologies. The results from this study could serve as a guideline for organizations aiming to leverage their historical process data for better strategic outcomes and operational excellence. |
