SUMMARY Topic: expectant couples experience of dance movement therapy: a thematic analysis. Aim: to reveal the experiences of expecting couples in dance-movement therapy. Subject: expecting couples who participated in a dance-movement therapy group (N=6). Research methodology: data for the empirical study were collected through semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was conducted using inductive thematic analysis. Research results: the inductive thematic analysis identified three main themes: “Perception of Imperfection – The Path of Parental Identity through DMT”, “The Influence of DMT on Strengthening Relationships in Expectant Couples”, and “Revealing the Dynamic Process of DMT in Expectant Couples”. Empirical research conclusions: analysis of the participants’ feedback reveals the impact of DMT experiences on the perception of motherhood and fatherhood. The dance-movement-based exploration integrates aspects of the formation of maternal and paternal identities, offering opportunities to view their roles as parents more positively and realistically. Participants acquired self-regulation skills, making constantly changing emotions more tolerable and manageable. DMT also encouraged the recognition of their own desires and needs, enhancing their perceived freedom of action and readiness for motherhood and fatherhood. This study highlights the importance of intimacy, non-verbal communication, touch, and shared experiences in the relationships of expectant couples. DMT helped couples to understand their desires and find ways to support each other in their relationships, contributing to a deeper understanding and a sense of security. According to the participants, these changes carried over into their daily lives, and there was an expressed need to continue deepening and nurturing their relationships through ongoing therapy. Participants described the therapeutic space as inviting and conducive to relaxation, encouraging them to explore their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations at their own pace. Witnessed experiences within the group allowed for the creation of even closer interpersonal connections, expressing their feelings, and being empathically accepted by other group members. The sense of unity that arose from shared vulnerability, as well as the deepening of mutual interaction, encouraged the emergence of new perspectives. Keywords: pregnancy, transition to motherhood/fatherhood, dance-movement therapy, biopsychosocial health. |
