Abstract [eng] |
Hostility and discrimination against sexual minorities is still a relatively common occurrence in various countries. The purpose of this study is to find out how students’ attitudes towards homosexuality and their psychopathy traits are related. The study was conducted using the Homophobia scale (HS; Wright et al., 1999) and the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM; Patrick et al., 2009). Attitudes towards a victim of a hate crime were also assessed by presenting a story created by the author. 168 students (37 males and 131 females) participated in the study, age ranging from 18 to 30 years (M = 21.84, SD = 2.46). The obtained results revealed that psychopathy traits and homophobia are related. In addition, homophobia and psychopathy traits were found to be more pronounced in the sample of male students. Homophobia was statistically significantly predicted by gender and the psychopathy trait meanness. Additionally, both lack and need for education on the characteristics of homosexual individuals were identified. Both lack and need for education were negatively statistically significantly related to homophobia. Overall, the results of the study show that manifestation of certain psychopathy traits can contribute to negative attitudes towards homosexual individuals. |
