Abstract [eng] |
Adolescents’ understanding of emotions, problematic behavior and personality functioning are important constructs during this period of life. Difficulties in these areas may cause negative consequences in further development. Meanwhile, studies examining the associations between these constructs are rather sparse. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between adolescents’ understanding of emotions, problematic behavior and personality functioning. The sample consisted of 289 adolescents, aged 13 – 16 years (52 pct. girls; M(SD)age 14,48 (0,62)), who study in Vilnius county. This study used: The Emotion Regulation Index for Children and Adolescents (ERICA) (MacDermott et al., 2010); Strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) (Goodman, 1997); Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire – Screener version (LoPF–Q 12–18) (Goth et al., 2018). The results showed that poorer understanding of emotions is associated with more expressed problematic behavior and higher level of personality dysfunction. Furthermore, more expressed problematic behavior is associated with higher level of personality dysfunction. Moreover, problematic behavior partly mediates relationship between adolescents’ understanding of emotions and personality functioning. Relationship between understanding of emotions and problematic behavior is fully mediated by personality functioning. |
