Abstract [eng] |
Committing crimes does not continue throughout a person's life, it stops at a certain period of life for a variety of reasons. Halfway house, a specialized open-type prison, is focused especially on reducing the repetition of criminal behaviour. Although the first half-way houses in Lithuania were established in 2016, there are no research related to their activities, functions, and experiences. The purpose of this work is to find out the experiences of convicts serving a prison sentence in a halfway house, emphasizing the applied measures and conditions aimed at changing a person's criminal behaviour. There is no single theory in criminology that can explain why individuals end their criminal careers. In this work, the manifestation of repeated crimes is analysed using life course criminology, E. Sutherland, T. Hirshi and other author’s ideas. The analysis of an independently conducted study with persons and employees serving sentences in halfway houses in Marijampole, Vilnius and Panevezys is presented. Qualitative research was conducted – 20 semi-structured interviews. The daily life, activities, and limitations of individuals in halfway houses are analysed. The main conclusion of the work allows to state that the conditions of the halfway house, which are focused on independence, (re)establishment of social relations, and work, create conditions for individuals to desistence their criminal career. |
