Abstract [eng] Most psychotherapy clients have lied to their therapists. Experienced physically, emotionally and cognitively, lying in psychotherapy can be difficult for clients seeking safety and acceptance in therapy. This experience can affect therapeutic process and influence therapeutic relationship, so it is extremely important to better understand this phenomenon. Notably, no similar type of research has been conducted in Lithuania. The purpose of this study is to reveal, analyze, and describe the experience of lying in the process of psychotherapy from the perspective of the client. Six long-term psychotherapy clients, aged 27 to 39, participated in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke (2006). After analyzing the research data, five themes were identified: Tormenting reactions to one‘s own lying; I seek to protect myself; „The mouth lies itself“; Lying is like stealing; Lying has meaning. The results of this study can complement the theoretical literature on the phenomenon of lying in psychotherapy and help psychotherapists understand their clients better.
