Abstract [eng] Due to the changing geopolitical situation, the question of the prospects of teaching Russian as a foreign language has recently been raised in the public discourse of the post-Soviet EU-member countries, where a large number of students learn Russian as a foreign language in general education schools. The Saeima of the Republic of Latvia has approved an amendment to the Law on Education of Latvia, according to which starting from the academic year of 2026-2027 the teaching of Russian as a second foreign language is to be phased out in the schools of this country, while in Lithuania, recommendations are made to reduce the teaching of Russian as a second foreign language; however, so far, no legislation has been adopted. This paper aims to analyse and compare the prospects of teaching Russian as a second foreign language in general education schools in Lithuania and Latvia. The theoretical part reviews the concept of language policy and planning through the framework of language as a problem, language as a right and language as a resource. The empirical research was conducted according to the general qualitative research methodology, qualitative data was collected from 12 educational experts using the balanced structured interview method, and the research data was analysed using the qualitative content analysis method. The results of the study revealed that the current situation and the future prospects of teaching English as a second foreign language in Lithuania and Latvia are very similar, because education policy makers in both these countries follow the same principles and direction aiming to reduce the scope of and eventually refuse teaching Russian as a second foreign language in schools of general education.
