The aim of this dissertation is to expand the possibilities of using word problems in mathematics education. The dissertation consists of an introduction, a literature review, three research chapters, a conclusion, a bibliography, and a summary. The research presented in the dissertation examines primary school mathematics textbooks from Lithuania and compares the results with cases from Singapore and Spain. The studies reveal the types of word problems that foster the development of mathematical communication skills, as well as explore opportunities for using word problems to introduce and teach new mathematical topics. The dissertation offers conclusions and recommendations for teaching word problems and presenting them in textbooks. |
