Abstract [eng] The year and a half duration study on subjects with face and bite abnormalities was conducted from September 2006 to March 2008. The aim of the study was to evaluate the peculiarities of Self representations before and after orthognathic surgery. 31 subjects before orthognathic surgery and 25 of them after 2 – 4 months interval after the performed surgery took part in the study. Method of the study was interview. Childhood self representation, present self representation, possible Self representations were investigated as well as self representations by significant others (mother, father and closest friend). Conclusions : 1. Difference between positive and negative childhood Self representations was statistically significant (p < 0,001) before and after the surgery. There was statistically significant prevalence of negative childhood Self representations in subjects childhood recollections. There was statistically significant domination (p < 0,02) of negative present Self representations before the surgery. After the surgery statistically significant (p < 0,001) prevalence of positive present Self representations was observed. Before and after the surgery subjects presented only positive possible (the year after) real Self representations. Before the surgery prevalence in subjects ideal possible (the year after) Self representations over avoiding possible (the year after) Self representations was statistically significant (p < 0,001). After the surgery statistically significant difference (p < 0,16) between the avoiding and ideal possible Self representations was not observed. 2. Before and after the surgery prevalence of positive over negative Self representations by significant others (mother, father, closest friend) was statistically significant (p < 0,001). Before the surgery there was no statistically significant difference between positive Self representations by individual significant others (mother, father and closest friend), while after the surgery prevalence of positive Self representations by closest friend was statistically significant (p < 0,001). 3. There was statistically significant (p < 0,001) prevalence of possible real (the year after) positive physical Self representations expectations before the surgery over the situation after the surgery. Before the surgery subjects expected in ideal case (after the year) statistically significant improvement in learning (p < 0,02) and professional career (p < 0,03) fields. After the surgery subjects expected in ideal case (after the year) statistically significant prevalence of positive intelligence (p < 0,001), positive professional career (p < 0,001) representations. 4. There was statistically significant (p < 0,001) reduction of negative present Self representations after the surgery comparing with those before the surgery. Statistically significant increase in positive present physical Self (p < 0,001) and present spare time (p < 0,01) representations after the surgery, comparing with those before the surgery, was observed. After the surgery statistically significant (p < 0,016) prevalence of positive present Self value representations over negative present Self value representations was observed. 5. Summary of obtained data allow us to maintain, that positive psychological changes were determined in subjects after the orthognathic surgery (more positive present and possible Self appreciation).
