Master thesis theoretically analyzes the conception of sustainable development and its miscellaneous understanding. It presents a summarized point of view according to ecological, social and economic groups, overviews the principles of sustainable development and forms of sustainability. The thesis discusses the influence that the concept of sustainability has on tourism. Sustainable tourism is overviewed as region’s possibility to create infrastructure of tourism which would maintain the base of natural resources and at the same time would create a similar to competitors’ market for the future generations. The concept of sustainable tourism is presented, the principles of sustainable tourism development, which highlight peculiarities of the conception of sustainable tourism comparing it to the conception of sustainability, are created. To ensure competitive superiority of Lithuania as a unique tourism region comparing to other countries, the thesis presents the problems of unique tourism region, protection of cultural and historical heritage, and suggests solving them by applying the conception of sustainable tourism development. Based on the analyzed theoretical aspects of sustainability, foreign countries’ experience in the tourism sector and the results of primary research, the principles of sustainable tourism development in Lithuania are formulated. The formulated principles of sustainable tourism development in Lithuania today are important in tourism industry. They will effectively allow developing tourism in Lithuania, promoting a higher application of principles creating tourism strategies, plans and local actions. They will also ensure effective application of sustainable tourism development system and sustainable tourism development model in practice. The thesis aims at presenting the essence of the conception of sustainability, its application for tourism, and formulating the principles of sustainable tourism development in Lithuania. Tasks to reach the goal: 1. to analyze progress of conception of sustainable development and forming consistency and to define the levels of sustainable development; 2. to present basic forms of sustainable conception and to define them; 3. to highlight the basic principles of sustainable tourism development and the influence on tourism system; 4. to present interactive relationship between sustainable tourism and tourism competition, and their influence on tourism; 5. to add new principles to sustainable tourism development in the system of Lithuanian tourism.
