Abstract [eng] 181 countries ground the provisions of their national systems of intangible cultural heritage protection on the principles of UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage that celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023. Globally, the UNESCO model and related practices are seen as a common standard. However, in Lithuania, the model is often treated as an adopted or external paradigm, and earlier mechanisms and perspectives of folk or, later, ethnic culture heritage protection continue to function in practice resulting in a conflict between “traditional” Lithuanian and contemporary global heritage protection. The paper reviews the development of the most salient international heritage protection models and related attitudes that have formed in this field and identifies conceptually opposite international perspectives that have the biggest influence on heritage protection (intangible cultural heritage, world or material heritage and folklore). The analysis employs examples of problematic practices in various countries, including Lithuania. International literature presents the folklore perspective as historical and having little significance for the present, while in Lithuania, the system of world or material heritage is seen as having no links with intangible heritage. The paper presents occurrences of theoretical attributes and concepts that characterize different international perspectives of heritage protection and resulting contradictions in practice in Lithuania and other countries. A wide context presented by integrating Lithuanian cases in a global map of problematic aspects can help to understand Lithuanian and global current issues and to enable finding more conceptual and integral solutions in intangible heritage protection.
