Abstract [eng] Professional competence is defined as one of the four professional competences of the teacher which development plays an important role in a daily teacher’s work (Čiužas, 2013). The content of professional competence of the educator consists of synthesis of abilities and skills of psychological, pedagogical, methodical, ethic, cultural, social, the knowledge of sports and capability to apply them in order to realise the determined targets of physical education of pupils (Blauzdys and others., 2012). The hypothesis of the study: It is believed that the comprehension of professional competence of the students of physical education study program can be caused by such factors as mastery of sports, sport experience and the intention to work in the program one has graduated. The aim of the study – is to empirically examine the comprehension of professional competence of the students of physical education focusing on the contexts of its dimensions of sport status, studying excellence, plans to take a vacancy in the studied field and the peculiarities of gaining of professional competence. The methodic of the present work. The methods of the research applied are the following: (1) theoretical, i.e. the systematic analysis of scientific literature, (2) empirical (the survey) and (3) statistical (descriptive statistics). 120 students of Physical Education Study Program took part in the research. Conclusion: 1. Having analysed the comprehension of professional competence of the students of physical education in the respect of studying excellence, it has proved to have no relations between the comprehension of studying excellence of the respondents and professional competence (p > 0,05). 2. It has been determined that the comprehension of professional competence of the students of physical education does depend on the level of sport mastery (p < 0,05),i.e. taking into consideration the competences of the national team members and advanced mastery athletes, the comprehension of almost all professional competence structural segments is evaluated by the best scores and the determined differences are statistically significant (p < 0,05). 3. It has been found out that the comprehension of professional competence of the students of physical education study programs is related with prospects to work in the field of the studied program (p < 0,05), i.e. the working students ted to give the best evaluation to the comprehension of all the structural components of professional competence. 4. The present hypothesis has confirmed, in fact. After the application of one way ANOVA, significant differences have been established between the comprehension of the professional competence of the students of physical education study program and their mastery, experience in sports, future plans to work in the field of the studied program.
