Abstract [eng] |
Text-Narcissus in Giedra Radvilavičiūtė's Essays This master thesis examines Giedra Radvilavičiūtė’s essays from metafictional perspective (with stronger emphasis on essays: „Privalomi parašyti tekstai“, from the collection Suplanuotos akimirkos, „Ilgas pasivaikščiojimas ant trumpo molo“, and „Nekrologas“, from the collection Šiąnakt aš miegosiu prie sienos). The work is based on metafictional theory implemented by Linda Hutcheon, Patricia Waugh and Mark Currie. The main objective of this study is to find out how metaficition is actualized in Radvilavičiūtė’s essays by analyzing the self-reflexive fictional narrative. The study is based on structural and intertextual analysis, the main goal being to reveal how the texts reflect their own fictional traits. Figurative analysis shows that the essays self-consciously draw attention to their artificiality through the use of non-fiction related figures, which can be divided into two groups: domestic thematic figures (food and eating, home-repair, mirrors, bathing) and existential thematic figures (the marginal existential poles: Eros and Thanatos). Furthermore, intertextual references show a complex transtextual web, which represents essays’ self-reflection, especially through the hypertextual relations with Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Despair. This analysis shows the main thematic division of Radvilavičiūtė’s essays: writing from experiences (patirtinis rašymas) versus forced writing (priverstinis rašymas) and reflects the premises and causes of such writing strategies. Thus, the essays which seem to be chaotically talking about everyday life, woman’s problems and interpersonal relationships, actually reflect a specific writing strategy. This study allows us to call Radvilavičiūtė’s essays metafictional and therefore includes the theory of metafiction into Lithuanian theoretical discourse. The thesis opens a new and unexplored path to metafictional analysis of Lithuanian literature. |
