The Encounter between Word and Image in the City of Rolandas Rastauskas and Remigijus Treigys: "Berlynalijos" The object of the analysis is a photo-essay Berlinalia by a contemporary Lithuanian writer / interdisciplinary artist Rolandas Rastauskas and a photographer Remigijus Treigys. The thesis focuses on intertextuality and intermediality of the text. Recognizing specific intertexts helps to show the discursive architecture of the city. While walking in the footsteps of Lithuanian flâneurs Rastauskas and Treigys, the map of memory starts to emerge. This heterogeneous map reflects the European history of the 20th century. The tragic historic event of the Holocaust is commemorated and peculiar virtual “memorials” are created in memory of particular people: German philosopher of Jewish origin Walter Benjamin and the Lithuanian photographer Raimundas Urbonas. Themes of city and memory (a memory in the / of the city) are combined with the reflection upon the mediated experience. A photo-essay appears as a curious material formation with a structure that challenges conventional relations between writing and hearing, image and seeing. The paratextual “network” of the book raises the question of translation highlighting its linguistic, intermedial and tactile aspects. Berlinalia defies “traditional” opposition between word and image. The analysis invokes critical thought of William J. T. Mitchell to reveal the dialectics of image and word as a dialogical complementary relationship. While trying to define the photo-essay genre, attention is focused on special architextual relations that include linguistic fragments’ dialogue with the novel genre, photographies’ relation to etching, photo-essay’s link to a photographic film and cinema. |
