The Semiotics of Passions as a Response to Paul Ricoeur's Critique The aim of this paper is to analize the introduction of Algirdas Julien Greimas book The Semiotics of Passions from the perspective of Paul Ricœur‘s critique intended to the project of semiotics. Algirdas Julien Greimas has sent the before-mentioned introduction to Ricœur himself. In result the text of this introduction became the crucial topic for the late Ricœur’s and Greimas’ debates about Semiotics of passions. This paperwork unfolds main ideas of Paul Ricœur and Algirdas Julien Greimas theories. The main ideas of Ricœur’s critique to Paris semiotics school are considered to be the distinction between explanaition and understanding and the question of ontology. The development of this distinction between explanation and understanding is considered in the light of former distinction between natural and human sciences. This analysis reconstructs the evolution of Algirdas Julien Greimas semiotic project from narrative grammar to semiotics of passions and investigates theoretical assumptions, presented in the introduction of The Semiotics of Passions. This paper reviews the public academic discussions between A. J. Greimas and P. Ricœur, presents their main ideas, critical reflection of Ricœur’s critique to semiotics and its response. |
