Abstract [eng] |
The topic of whistleblower protection is widely discussed at the international level; however, at the national level, it still does not receive sufficient attention, despite its significant importance for employee protection and the public interest. Individuals who report on potential, ongoing, or past violations may face retaliatory actions that can negatively affect both their social and economic standing. Such circumstances contribute to a culture of silence. In this context, comprehensive legal regulation of whistleblower protection is of crucial importance, as it provides adequate safeguards for reporting individuals. Taking this into account, on October 23, 2019, the European Parliament and the Council adopted Directive (EU) 2019/1937 “on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union law”, which all Member States were required to transpose into national law. Lithuania implemented this directive in 2022 by adopting a new version of the Law on the Protection of Whistleblowers of the Republic of Lithuania. This thesis analyses the EU whistleblower protection standards and their implementation in the Lithuanian national legal framework. |
