Abstract [eng] The end of a professional career is one of the most significant transitions in a person’s life, often bringing about a range of changes and potentially negative experiences. Given that professional athletes typically retire earlier than individuals in other occupations, this study aims to explore the mental health experiences of retired professional athletes. The sample consisted of eight former professional athletes (four men and four women) who participated in semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis approach, which revealed five overarching themes and corresponding subthemes that characterize participants' experiences. The identified themes include: Experiences of a professional sports career; Psychological responses to the end of a professional sports career; Internal (psychological) changes associated with retirement from professional sport; External life changes following career termination; and Strategies for adapting to the end of a professional athletic career. The findings of this study provide new insights for professionals working with athletes across various fields.
