Abstract [eng] Vitality is a component of psychological well-being and is closely linked to the satisfaction of basic psychological needs. Playfulness is also associated with well-being, yet the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to examine whether the satisfaction of basic psychological needs mediates the relationship between playfulness and subjective vitality, and how these variables predict vitality over time. In this longitudinal study, 178 students participated in Wave 1 (74 % women, 22.5 % men, 1.7 % other, 0.6 % undisclosed) and 43 in Wave 2 (67.4 % women, 30.2 % men, 2.3 % other). The Subjective Vitality Scale, the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale, and the OLIW Playfulness Scale were used. Results indicated that playfulness and the satisfaction of competence and relatedness needs predicted vitality at Time 1. Additionally, basic psychological needs partially mediated the link between playfulness and vitality. However, neither playfulness nor need satisfaction predicted vitality at Time 2, which may be due to study limitations. Further long-term studies involving playfulness interventions are recommended.
