Abstract [eng] |
The aim of the study is to analyse the motivations of female Riflemen to defend their country in the event of a threat. To achieve this goal, 20 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with women joined the Lithuanian Riflemen`s Union after 24 February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The study shows that the motivations to defend the country are shaped by a strong negative view of the Soviet occupation, a clear perception of Russia as an enemy, and an understanding of Lithuania as a successful state and home. Importantly, the respondents perceive the defence of the country as their personal responsibility. The decision to defend the country is influenced by family experiences and the struggles of previous generations for the freedom of Lithuania. At the same time, Lithuania is seen as a small country, and there is a feeling that every citizen`s contribution to the defence of the country is important. The study also showed that the perception of femininity is different and multifaceted. Femininity and motherhood can be contrasted with warfare and perceived as deterrents to national defence. In other cases, however, the duty to defend the country is interpreted through femininity, where it is seen as a woman`s primary duty and becomes one of the main motivations for participating in national defence. |
