Abstract [eng] |
This thesis explores the experience of loneliness during adolescence, a particularly relevant topic due to its growing prevalence and negative psychological consequences. In this study, group art therapy, as a non-verbal method of self-expression, provided an opportunity to explore the inner world of adolescent girls through creative processes as a way to reduce the experience of loneliness. The research aims to gain a deeper understanding of how girls experiencing loneliness engage in the process of self-discovery through art therapy, using various yet complementary qualitative methods. The aim of the study is to reveal the self-awareness experiences of adolescent girls who are going through loneliness, within the context of art therapy. Participants: Three adolescent girls aged 16–17 who experience feelings of loneliness. Research objectives: 1. To review scientific literature on adolescent developmental stages, identity formation, and the causes of loneliness among older adolescents. 2. To examine the applicability of art therapy for adolescents experiencing loneliness. 3. To uncover the girls' experiences of self-discovery through art therapy, based on thematic analysis and the analysis of their creative work. Methods: Data were collected using the researcher’s observation notes, semi-structured interviews, and drawings. For data analysis, a qualitative thematic analysis and drawing analysis were used, applying the Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) method. Results and conclusions: Thematic and drawing analysis revealed that the experiences, inner states, and identity exploration of each participant manifested in a complex way—both through verbal reflection and visual expression. The symbols and formal elements used in the drawings were closely related to the thoughts, feelings, and experiences expressed during interviews. The empirical data support the conclusion that art therapy particularly in a group setting—is an effective tool for reducing feelings of loneliness and strengthening self-awareness among adolescent girls. The thematic and visual analyses showed that all participants experienced positive changes: a decrease in loneliness, improved emotional recognition, increased self-confidence, and a clearer sense of identity.
