Abstract [eng] |
Phosphogypsum, a by-product formed during phosphoric acid production from apatites at the "Lifosa" factory in Kėdainiai, Lithuania, has accumulated in massive quantities. Despite being classified as non-hazardous, its chemical composition varies depending on the source of the phosphate raw material. Globally, phosphogypsum has been explored for use in fertilizers, construction materials, and even mushroom cultivation. This study aims to reassess and characterize phosphogypsum waste from various locations within the factory dump using a range of physico-chemical methods. Based on the findings, we propose its utilization as a precursor for synthesizing high-quality, low-cost calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) for artificial bone implants. |
