Abstract [eng] The building at the beginning of Strašūno street No 6 (currently it is Žemaitijos st. 4), which is nowadays in dangerous conditions, has been a cultural center since the beginning of the 19th century in the heterogenic city of Vilnius. The “Meficei Haskala” library, which was later on named State Vilnius City library no 5 and which became the Vilna Ghetto Library under the Nazi occupation, played an important role in the history of Vilnius by influencing its cultural development and by giving its citizens a certain kind of identity. Due to the important historical events that took place in this building it became a so called genius urbis with the status of an object of regional importance. The aim of the research is to analyze and present the conception of the former Vilnius ghetto library in today’s narrative of the Jewish community and to show how this memory place influences the formation of the community’s memory. We hope that during the next few years this historical building will become a new cultural memory institution and serve as a bridge between old history and new generations.
