This research is a case study focusing on a historical artifact designated as a written heritage document (wax tablet), recorded and preserved at Vilnius University Library. This particular specimen is the only known one in Lithuania and is considered a valuable unique item. The wax tablets were restored in 2023–2024, and the restoration process revealed interesting technological and cultural facts. The aim of this article is to present the methodology for restoring wax tablets, using the example of the tablets preserved at Vilnius University Library. The research methods included a detailed analysis of the wax tablets, the determination of their technological characteristics, and historical contextualization. Emphasis is placed on utilizing the practical and theoretical benefits gained during the restoration process for scientific purposes. The study systematically analyzes the historiography of wax tablets, their development and experiences, the geographical distribution of such artifacts, their connection to Lithuania, and their functional peculiarities. It also examines the means and materials used for tablet production, as well as the technology and specifics of their restoration. |
