Abstract [eng] According to scientists, the relationships between a sports pedagogue and an athlete are essential, that influence a sportsperson‘s motivation, self-respect, his or her activity. Educatees‘ aims and sport interest are formed by a sports pedagogue, who draws everybody together for a common goal by encouraging motivation to do sports, to achieve the best sports results (Pelletier et al., 2013; Ryan, Deci, 2007). Increase of motivation depends on the leadership style of a sports pedagogue, process of preparation for sport (Valerand, 2007). More and more often scientists raise questions: how is the motivation for sports activity influenced by a coach‘s leadership style?, how to encourage athletes‘ motivation? Object of the research: correlation between karate athletes‘ motivation for sport and a sports pedagogue‘s leadership style. Research hypothesis: it is presumed that there is a correlation between sports pedagogues‘ leadership style and their young karate athletes‘ inner motivation for sport. Purpose of the research: to investigate the correlation between sports pedagogues‘ democratic-autocratic approaches and young Kyokushin karate athletes‘ motivation for sport. Methodology of the research is based on an athlete and coach relationships‘ motivational model and self-determination theory. Methods of the research: in the research, the (1) theoretical (systematic analysis of scientific literature, formulation of hypotheses), (2) empirical (questionnaire), and (3) statistical (descriptive statistics, proving of the hypotheses) research methods were applied. Ninety-three 14-19 year old young Kyokushin athletes participated in the research. Conclusions: (1) Correlational analysis has revealed a significant direct relation between the leadership style and lack of motivation: the more conspicuous democratic (r = 0.301; p = 0.003) or autocratic (r = 0.204; p = 0.049) approaches are applied by pedagogues in their work, the greater is the lack of motivation in young karate athletes. The research results emphasize the peculiarity of the sport branch, that while working with young karate athletes, their pedagogue should apply a mixed style. (2) The research has established that there is no significant difference of motivation in young karate athletes of different expertise. Notably, young karate athletes‘ intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and the lack of motivation appear rather similarly, regardless of expertise. Only the expression of identified regulation motivation is more peculiar to the members of Lithuanian team (p = 0.012). This reveals that it is very important for the members of the national team that participation in sports activity adds to their better self-cognition. (3) The hypothesis - it is presumed that there is a correlation between sports pedagogues‘ leadership style and their young karate athletes‘ inner motivation for sport – was not confirmed. While applying correlational analysis, there were no significant differences identified in intrinsic motivation of young karate athletes, belonging to different groups according to expression of sports pedagogues‘ leadership styles. It can be asserted, that pedagogues‘ educational approaches and behavior in classes, related to the approaches, has no significant influence on young karate athletes‘ intrinsic motivation.
