The Lithuanian music school system is currently undergoing a fundamental shift in values, transforming from prestigious institutions focused on training professionals into institutions that are accessible and open to all, and oriented toward the holistic development of the child‘s personality. The specific features of music school activities are manifested in the relationship between the preservation of deep academic traditions and tje context of contemporary changes. The theoretical section traced the evolution of music schools from the interwar “golden age” to today’s system of education that complements formal education (FŠPU), based on the philosophical concept of becoming and the theoretical ideas of constructivism. A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted with the directors and teachers of music schools in the Kaunas region. The study revealed the main aspects of institutional change ant the challenges arising today. The study found that the mission of music schools has shifted from the goal of training professional musicians to the education of cultured, socially active individuals. The teacher‘s role has shifted from that of a traditional knowledge transmitter to that of an educator-psychologist, whose educational goal is to ensure a safe environment for the student, where they can confident and learn music according to their abilities. The study revealed that a ,,quick-fix“ culture now prevails, along with increasing student workload, which hinders the pursuit of more profesional results. The study‘s findings indicate that the continuity of music schools as institutions that foster deeper values also depends on the leadership of their directors and their ability to strike a balance between preserving academic tradicions and adapting to the needs of today‘s generation. |
