This thesis analyses the experiences of Muslim migrant women in their interactions with Lithuanian public institutions. The relevance of the topic is underscored by the growing scale of international migration and the increasing religious and ethnic diversity within Lithuanian society. The scientific problem of the topic is based on the premise that public institutions function as environments that maintain gender order, and visible markers of religious identity can predetermine the nature of institutional communication. The aim of this Master’s thesis is to investigate how the interaction of Muslim migrant women with Lithuanian public institutions is shaped under the conditions of the intersection of gender, religion, and ethnicity. The study was conducted using qualitative research methodology. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The interview transcripts were analysed using the inductive thematic coding method, and the coding results were interpreted based on the theoretical ideas of Connell and Yuval Davis. The study found that women face prejudice based on religion and appearance yet develop active strategies to access services. The effectiveness of these strategies depends on the attitudes of institutional staff and the resources women have available. |
